I don’t consider myself a good musician, but I love the Drumeo app. The website promises to help you to “learn the drums faster with step-by-step lessons, thousands of songs and unlimited personal support.”
Drumming Equipment Required
All I did was buy a pair of 5A drumsticks from Manny’s Brisbane shop. The guy was kind enough to give me a 5-minute lesson in the store. The next purchase would be a practice drum pad.
If you don’t have your drumsticks on hand, you can click your fingers, tap your feet, or even just tap a pair of lead pencils. You can get started for under AUD$100. Easy.
Drumeo Online Shop
The Drumeo website does have an online shop, where you can purchase music accessories, clothing and accessories. Think in-ear monitors, Drumeo Comfort Cover, Drumeo P4 Practice Pad, Drumeo Tone Control Kit, QuietKick, 5A Drumsticks, Drum Key, and Drumeo QuietPad.
If you’re after a book you might like to read “The Drummer’s Toolbox” or “The Best Beginner Drum Book.”
Carry with you branded merchandise like the Drumeo Foiled Water Bottle, minimalist hat, beanie, fun music-themed shirts, and hoodies. The colours are more masculine but that’s okay. There is something for every season and everyone.
Pros
- Good range of friendly and motivating music teachers
- 7-day free trial

Favourite Teachers
My favourite teacher is Domino Santantonio. She has a great on-screen presence and is instantly likable and fun. Other female drummers are Hannah Welton and Dorothea Taylor.
Jared Falk is the co-founder and CEO of Drumeo. He’s been one of the instructors since the beginning of 2012. I find Brandon Toews is a great teacher, too.
The coaches are a diverse group of pro drummers who host regular live Question and Answer sessions, take lessons and demonstrate different music concepts.
I’m assuming that professional drumming is dominated by men because most of the music teachers are male. Drummers come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and ethnicities.
“No matter how good you are, how old you are, we’re all still part of a drumming family,” said Dorothea Taylor.
Watch on Drumeo’s YouTube
I like to catch up on music lessons by watching them on our smart television via the YouTube app. However, you can also watch and listen to them on your mobile phone or tablet.
I have watched Drumeo lessons first thing in the morning hitting pillows in bed. I have watched drumming lessons in the living room rocking in my recliner and standing up. I have watched them at my regular computer desk and on different devices.
Take a Drumeo Lesson
When you are ready to get serious about drumming, you can take lessons. I prefer to play along to a video. But you can also print out a sheet of music paper. Now, I don’t have a music stand, so I’ll leave this until I get a bigger practice space.
My massage therapist said he had a famous client who was just like a regular dad after concerts. Later he told me about some friends who didn’t have any practice space, so they hired out a storage unit. In the locker room, they stored all their musical instruments including a full drum kit, and it doubled as their practice space. Nobody could complain about how loud it was!!!
The Technique Lessons are divided into:
- Hand technique
- Foot technique
- Practice tips
- Health (think stage fright, pregnancy, mental health, tendinitis, age, avoiding injuries and hearing loss)
In a couple of weeks, I was able to quickly relearn some music theory and language. There is a wide range of different genres and songs you can learn to play.
Take a Drumeo Course
You can take a full-length Drumeo Course. The lesson plans are divided into 10 groups. Your clear path, frustration-free guide to playing the drums.
- Getting Started on The Drums
- Basic Theory and Ear Training
- The Moeller Method and Essential Grooves
- Rhythmic Groupings and Independence
- Old Time and Inspiration
- Foot Technique and Combinations
- Brushes, Texture and Articulation
- Advanced Styles and Musical Decisions
- Go Anywhere on The Drums
The lessons are grouped by style, essential techniques, play more creatively, legendary grooves and more. You can play along to Rock, Funk, Pop, Jazz, Gospel, Big Band, Metal, Latin, Reggae, Progressive, Blues, Indian, Afro Cuban and New Orleans.
Play a Song with Drumeo
The Drumeo Songs menu lets you play your favourite songs. It promises to let you access 5,000 plus note-for-note song breakdowns for every style, era, and skill with handy play-along tools. That’s a huge library of music. You won’t get bored any time soon!!!
The songs are divided into music genres including 90s Rock, Classic Rock, Modern Rock, Metal, Pop, Jazz, Blues, Country, Hip Hop and Rap, Soul and Funk, and Worship.
The music teachers break down different songs. For example, you might see a top view of the drummer on the left-hand side of the screen. On the right side of the screen, you might see the foot movements. Sometimes, you’ll also see the musical notes as a bar underneath both videos. It’s all very clever and professionally edited.
If you are ready to get started with the percussion family, then Drumeo is an affordable and great way to get started at home.
The Drumeo app is available for Apple and Android devices.
You can join on a monthly or annual membership plan. You can cancel anytime.
You can join over 200,000 drummers who receive free weekly drum lessons.
Highly recommended.
